How To Deep Clean Your Carpets

Cleaning up the room - woman with vacuum cleaner, baby sitting on floorOnce in a while your carpets may benefit from being deep cleaned using either carpet shampoo or carpet powder. Deep cleaning will remove the stains, odours and deep down grime that your vacuum cleaner leaves behind.

Deep cleaning your carpet will help it look good for longer and stop unwanted nasty odours too.

Carpet Shampooing

Wet shampooing of carpets is best done using a shampooing machine/carpet cleaner. These can be costly to buy so it may be worth hiring one. Always follow the instructions with the machine and with the cleaning product. If you are hiring the carpet cleaner then the cleaning product will usually be supplied with it along with full instructions. The main disadvantage of wet carpet cleaning using shampoo is of course that the carpet can be damp for some time afterwards. During this time is it very easy for the carpet to pick up new stains. It is therefore important to protect the carpet from use whilst it is drying. This can be difficult in high traffic areas such as hallways. To overcome this as much as possible, make sure you remove as much water as possible from the carpet during the cleaning process, allow adequate ventilation in the room to speed up the drying process, cover the carpet temporarily if you do need to walk on it but avoid this as much as possible.

Carpet Powder

Dry powder has one distinct advantage in that the carpet can be walked on immediately after it has been cleaned. Powder carpet cleaner can penetrate deep into the carpet pile and lift stains and odours out. They need leaving on the carpet for at least 30 minutes or preferably over night then simply vacuum off. Bicarbonate of soda can be used as a dry carpet cleaning powder. It is has good deodorant properties and ideal for those who may not like the perfume in proprietary carpet cleaners.

Regular care of carpets

Regular thorough vacuuming of carpets will increase the amount of time between deep cleans.
